Iceland Women’s National Team post qualification (12.07.2024 @/footballiceland on Instagram)

Iceland Women’s National Team are heading into their fifth consecutive European Championship this Summer, their second under head coach, Þorsteinn Halldórsson.

After being grouped in the last two euros, the team will be looking to go a step further this year and make it to the knockout stages once again.

In 2022, the team was drawn in group D where they played France, Belgium and Italy in Manchester and Rotherham.

Thanks to goals from Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir,  Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir and Dagný Brynjarsdóttir, they picked up three 1-1 draws in the group stage leading to a third place finish; no qualification for the quarter finals despite going unbeaten.

In order to qualify for this year's tournament, the team faced Germany, Austria and Poland in three two-legged matches.

The girls began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Poland before facing Germany in a tough 3-1 loss away from home.

Next international break saw a 1-1 against Austria in Ried im Inkreiss before a 2-1 win at home.

The final stages saw a relatively surprising 3-0 win over Germany in Reykjavík and a 1-0 against Poland to secure their spot in Switzerland.

Fixtures:

Wednesday 2nd July: Iceland vs Finland (17:00 BST)

Sunday 6th July: Switzerland vs Iceland (20:00 BST)

Thursday 10th July: Norway vs Iceland (20:00 BST)

The group stages will be followed by the quarter finals, the furthest Iceland have ever gotten in the competition, and will be played between the 16th and 19th of July.

Following this the semis which will be played on the 22nd & 23rd of July and the final on July 27th.

Key players:

Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir has been the nation's captain since 2023.

The Bayern Munich defender became the first Icelandic footballer to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 2024.

She made her debut in an international tournament just a month after turning 18, now with well over 130 international appearances for her nation, Viggósdóttir plays a crucial role in the nation's back line.

At just 23 years old, Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir is a staple in the Iceland starting line up and has been for some time.

Despite a rocky domestic season, the attacker scored four of Iceland's six goals in their latest nations league campaign, including a crucial hattrick in a 3-3 draw against Euro hosts, Switzerland, who are also in their group this summer.

Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir is another young player returning for her second European tournament this summer.

In December 2024 the forward became the first Icelander to score four goals in a single match against AS Roma, proving her goal scoring abilities against strong opposition.

Since then, the former Wolfsburg player has completed a permanent transfer to Angel City in the NWSL, keeping her at the club through the 2027 season.
