Breaking Boundaries: Records in Women's Football

With women's football on the rise, more and more records and milestones are being reached and broken. Here is a collection of different records in women's football reached over the last few years.


Various attendance records: 


The highest attendance recorded for a game was for the 2022 UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg at Camp Nou with 91 '648 attendance.


For the Women’s World Cup (WWC) in Australia and New Zealand in 2023, they sold nearly two million tickets, making it the most attended WWC in history.


Although the attendance record for a single game set at the 1999 WWC in the United States, where the most attended game was the final between the USA and China with a 90 ‘185 attendance, was not broken.


The highest attendance at a Women's European Championship game was 87 ‘192, at the 2022 final at Wembley Stadium, where England beat Germany 2-1 on home ground to secure their Euros title, beating the tournament's previous record of 68 ‘871 set in the group stage at Old Trafford Stadium.


The highest attendance for a friendly game was set on the 30th November 2024, when England and USA tied 0-0 at Wembley with 78 ‘346 people in attendance.


When England hosted the Netherlands for the UEFA Nations League game at Wembley Stadium in December of 2023, the also broke the record for the tournament with a crowd of 71 ‘632 people.


Looking at the first tier League in England, the Barclays Womens Super League (WSL), the record was broken on February 17th 2024 at the Arsenal Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal played Manchester United in front of 60'160 people.


Also in the United States the league games are starting to get more and more attention, with the attendance record across all leagues in the country with 35‘038 spectators set in June of 2024, where Chicago Red Stars played Bay FC at Wrigley Field.



Transfer fee records:


The record for the highest transfer fee paid for a player was slightly over one million euros (1.1 Million) when Chelsea FC paid for Naomi Girma to transfer to England from her club San Diego Wave (US) in January of 2025.

 

The two previous records were Racheal Kundanaji, who transferred from Madrid CFF in Spain to Bay FC for a fee of 805 '000 euros in 2024, and Barbra Banda transferring from Shanghai Shengli to Orlando Pride for slightly over 640' 000 euros.


Before 2024, Keira Walsh’s 470 '000 euro fee to transfer from Manchester City to FC Barcelona in 2022 was the highest paid amount.

  • Most Champions League wins: Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) with 8 titles

  • Most League wins in the WSL (England): Chelsea FC with 7 titles

  • Most League wins in Liga F (Spain): Barcelona FC with 9 titles

  • Most League wins in Division 1 (FRA): Olympique Lyonnais with 17 titles

  • Most League wins in the AXA Women's Super League (Switzerland): FC Zürich with 24 titles

  • Most Bundesliga titles (Germany): VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt with 7 titles each

  • Team winning the most National Women's Soccer League (USA) playoffs: Portland Thorns FC with 3 wins

  • Team with the most NWSL shields: North Carolina Courage and Seattle Reign FC share the top of the podium with 3 shields each


Various individual player records (numbers as of april 2025):


  • Most capped player (worldwide): Kristine Lilly (USA) with 354 caps for her country

  • Most goals scored in World Cups: Marta (BRA) with 17 goals across 6 world cups (23 games)

  • Top scorer of the WSL (England): Vivianne Miedema (NED) scored 87 goals since joining the competition in 2017. She also holds the record for most goals scored by the same player in one match: Netting back six goals for Arsenal in a game against Bristol City in 2019.

  • Top scorer in Liga F (Spain): Jennifer Hermoso (ESP) won the golden boot 5 times since joining in 2015

  • Player with highest market value (worldwide): Aitana Bonmati (ESP) with 800 ‘000 Euros
