2025 Summer is a big one for Women’s Sport including Cricket as International Cricket and the Hundred competition continue. This is your beginners guide to the competitions happening this summer.
In cricket, an over consists of six balls which are delivered (or thrown) by the bowler to a batsman at the opposite end by the wicket. There is a maximum of four overs for each bowler and there are restrictions in place for the fielders which encourage big hits and high scores.
Both One Day Internationals and T20 have different squads involved but the majority are involved with both. There are four main cricketing roles that the individuals could be; Bowlers, Batters, Wicket Keepers and All Around performers.
If you are predominantly a bowler, then you would be one of the first on the sheets and when playing T20 cricket there will be five bowlers each playing four overs. With Batters, you are normally one of the first on the call sheets when the group goes to bat.
Alternatively, if you are an all around performer you will have the opportunity to do both depending on what the rest of the squad is like. A wicket keeper is known as one of the hardest positions on the field after the performer looks after the wicket and if a cricketer is run out, they are known to hit the wickets.
T20 Cricket:
Twenty20 (which is abbreviated normally to T20) is a short format of cricket. In 2003, it was introduced by the England and Wales cricket board (ECB) as an inter-county competition. In a game, the two sides have one innings each and are restricted to a maximum of 20 overs.
England will face India for four T20 matches across the UK over two weeks, starting on the 28th June and finishing on July 12th. They first travel to Trent Bridge before heading to Bristol, then to the Kia Oval before playing at Old Trafford and finishing at Edgbaston.
One Day International (ODI):
Typically known as a One Day International (ODI), this format is played by two sides with international status of which the sides play 50 overs and the game can last up to seven hours but it is over within the day. The difference between an ODI and a T20 is that in an ODI both sides establish either a target or chase it but in a T20 game it is designed to be more rapid and intense pace.
After playing ODIs against Australia and West Indies already this year, they then face India at the Utilita Arena in Southampton on July 16th. After this, the Hundred starts on 5th August where many of the performers will face off against each other in a fresh competition which has been around since 2021.
