Ever since their 2023 Women’s World Cup win, the status of women’s football in Spain has changed dramatically.

Their win in the last major tournament helped the growth of women’s football in Spain and gained respect for the champions.

Their strengths include a solid style of play and they typically stick with what they know rather than changing their game.

They normally play with a 4-3-3 formation especially in major tournaments and have one of the most dangerous attacks in the world football.

Squad

On Tuesday 10th June, Montserrat Tomé announced her 23 player squad ready for the tournament. Out of the 23 players, 17 of them play in the Liga F with 6 playing overseas.

Since the 2022 Euros, 12 players stay with the side with Montserrat bringing a variety of new and returning faces to the squad for the tournament.

In net, she had Cata Coll (Barcelona), Esther Sullastres (Sevilla) and Adriana Nanclares (Athletic Club) named. Meanwhile for Defenders she called up, Olga Carmona (Real Madrid), Laia Aleixandri (Free Agent), María Méndez (Real Madrid), Irene Paredes (Barcelona), Ona Batlle (Barcelona), Jana Fernández (Barcelona) and Leila Ouahabi (Manchester City).

In Midfield, Maite Zubieta (Athletic Club), Alexia Putellas (Barcelona), Aitana Bonmatí (Barcelona), Patri Guijarro (Barcelona), and Vicky López (Barcelona) all got called up.

In the forward position, Esther González (Gotham FC), Lucía García (CF Monterrey), Mariona Caldentey (Arsenal), Athenea Del Castillo (Real Madrid), Alba Redondo (Real Madrid), Cristina Martín-Prieto (Benfica), Claudia Pina (Barcelona), and Salma Paralluelo (Barcelona) all got called up for this year's tournament.

Manager

Montserrat Tomé Vázquez is the Spanish manager and a former player herself who played for both Barcelona and Levante.

She previously was the assistant in the Spanish National Team from 2018, until her appointment in 2023 following the departure of Jorge Vilda.

As Manager, She has won the UEFA Women’s Nations League in the 2023-24 season.

How did they qualify?

During the European Qualifiers, Spain was placed in Group A2 alongside Denmark, Belgium and Czech Republic.

They won five out of six of their games including one loss against Czech Republic and advanced to the final tournament.

This was due to the country winning their group and got automatic qualification for this years tournament.

Past EURO history

Spain have been to the Euros on four occasions prior to the competition in Switzerland, with their best result being the semi-finals in 1997.

In 2013, 2017 and 2022, Spain have failed to go past the quarter-final stages.

In 2022, Spain lost against England in the quarter-finals after an extra time goal from the eventual winners.

Captain

Irene Paredes is the captain for the national team and is the second most capped player behind Alexia Putellas with her also being the vice captain.

The 33 year old is one of many players that play their club football at Barcelona and has 13 goals to her name currently.

Key Players:

Key players in the squad would be two time Ballon D’or winners Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati as well as Mariona Caldentey.

All three attackers were in this year's champions league final with Mariona securing the win with Arsenal.

Her flair helped the side win the competition with herself winning the inaugural WSL Player of the Season and Arsenal securing second place in the league.

Meanwhile, for both Alexia and Aitana, their fight in midfield helped Barcelona with their success across the years and they implemented it into the national team during the tournaments.

Success would be

Following on from their 2023 Women’s World Cup win and UEFA Nations League 2024 win, they look to make it three for three but are facing some tough competition.

They look to win the competition and are one of the favourites but if they fail to win, it will be tough for them as they look to bounce back in the UEFA Women’s Nations League.
