Arsenal's 24/25 season started with uncertainty but ended the season with champions league triumph, marking a historic comeback.
A rocky start
On the 6th of October 2024, Arsenal drew 0-0 to Everton, a match they should have won. This was followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea on the 12th of October.
These results intensified the scrutiny of head coach Jonas Eidevall, who subsequently resigned on the 15th of October 2024.
The Slegers Effect
Assistant coach Renée Slegers stepped in as interim head coach, bringing immediate impact! Under her leadership, Arsenal embarked on a 13 match unbeaten streak.
Recognising her success, Arsenal appointed Slegers as permanent head coach on the 17th of January 2025.
Standout performers
Mariona Caldentey, during her debut season at Arsenal made 49 appearances and netted 21 goals across all competitions. She also received Arsenal's player of the season award.
Her stunning goal against Lyon in the Champions League semi- final was named goal of the tournament.
Alessia Russo continued her impressive form since signing for Arsenal in 2023. This season she has made 48 appearances and scored 24 goals. She won the WSL golden boot, alongside Manchester City’s bunny shaw, this season.
Vice captain and childhood gooner Leah Williamson, provided leadership and defensive solidity throughout the season, playing an important role both on and off the pitch.
WSL
Arsenal ended the season in the title race for the WSL. After a few weeks fighting for a place in the top 2, they came in at second place, behind Chelsea and just ahead of Manchester United.
Champions League journey
Arsenal's European campaign started on the 4th of September with a 6-0 win over Scottish side Rangers.
Arsenal stayed dominant throughout their campaign despite setbacks include losses to BK Häcken (1-0), Bayern Munich (5-2) and Real Madrid (2-0).
However, the team showed resilience by overturning each defeat in the return legs.
In the semi finals after a 2-1 home defeat to Lyon, Arsenal secured an incredible 4-1 away win advancing with a 5-3 aggregate score!
A historic victory
On 24th of May 2025, Arsenal faced reigning champions Barcelona, in the Champions league final in Lisbon. Super sub Stina Blackstenius, scored the decisive goal leading Arsenal to a 1-0 victory and their first European title since 2007.
This season's triumphs reinstated Arsenal at the top of European football. Next season Arsenal will be fighting for more trophies, and seeing what else they can succeed under Slegers.
