Liverpool finished this season in 7th place, three places below their impressive 4th place finish in the 23/24 season. Finishing with 25 points the same amount as 6th place, Aston Villa, but only 5 points clear of 11th place, Tottenham Hotspur, let’s delve into Liverpool’s seasons full of ups and downs.

Manager

Liverpool started the season with manager Matt Beard who secured promotion from the Championship for them in the 21/22 season. In February 2025, Liverpool

announced the departure of Beard describing the decision as mutual. This decision came after a hard run of results, with a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City seeming the final blow for the Liverpool manager.

Following his departure, his assistant since the 20/21 season, Amber Whiteley took over the managerial role as interim head coach. Liverpool have not announced a permanent coach for the 25/26 season yet, it is unknown of Whiteley’s future with the club.

Noticeable Fixtures

Liverpool have previously been known to cause upset and surprise in their fixtures against the top teams in the league with a memorable 4-3 win over Hayes’ Chelsea at the end of the 23/24 season. However, it seems they have not maintained this streak this season with some tough losses seen through 4-0 losses to Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United as well as a 3-0

loss to Chelsea. Liverpool did seem to improve their season with a 3-1 win over Manchester United at Anfield and holding Champions, Chelsea to a goalless draw

until added time on the final game of the season.

Next Season

Next seasons aims for Liverpool start with the appointment of a permanent manager one who can install a winning mentality in the team. Additionally,

further aims could include increasing squad depth with the defence needing addressing with conceding 37 goals this season. As well, the addition of a clinical

forward would add depth to this squad, with a need of more goal-scoring opportunities needed for the reds. Another aim for Liverpool would be to compete for a trophy with them setting sights on the League Cup or FA

Cup. This aim would seem achievable for the Reds considering their successive FA cup campaign this year. Liverpool made it to the semi-finals this season, losing

2-1 to Chelsea at Kingsmeadow, however, they did lead 1-0 in the game due to a stunner from forward Olivia Smith. Additionally, in the FA cup Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0, Rugby Borough 2-0 and West Ham 5-0.

Key Player

A key player for this season must be forward Olivia Smith. The number eleven signed for the club in the summer of 2024, for a club record fee. The 20-year-old

proved herself week in week out with 20 appearances in the WSL scoring 7 goals as well as a goal in the League cup and FA cup. Smith’s impressive season earnt her the club’s Standard Chartered Player of the Season award.
